The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics was established in 1996. It was first set up as a Language Centre
in March 1972 and was responsible for conducting language courses relevant to the needs of the faculties and other centres
of the university. Among the languages offered are Malay, English, Arabic, Burmese, Dutch, French, Iban, Italian, Japanese,
Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Thai and Vietnamese.
Since its elevation to the level of Faculty in 1996, the institution has developed significantly in terms of the provision
of resources for teaching, learning and research. The Faculty has more than 120 academicians who are dedicated to research
and teaching in languages and linguistics as well as a wide range of facilities and resources to support learning and research.
The mission of the Faculty is to be a renowned teaching and research institution in the fields of languages and linguistics
in line with the national aspirations and global importance. To realize this vision, the Faculty is guided by the following
objectives;
To cultivate academic excellence and scholarship among students in the fields of language and linguistics
through quality teaching and learning.
To develop academic discipline at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
To encourage professional development of the teaching staff through research and good practices.
The Faculty offers courses at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. At the undergraduate level,
the Faculty offers two programmes:
1. The Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics in nine languages (English, Chinese, Tamil, Japanese,
Arabic,
French, Italian, German and Spanish)
2. The Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics with Education (Chinese)
At the higher degree level, the Faculty offers the following programmes:
1. Master of Modern Language Studies
2. Master of English as a Second Language
3. Master of Linguistics
4. PhD in Linguistics
Apart from teaching and learning, the Faculty actively promotes both individual and group research related to language and
linguistics. Some of the more prominent research areas include Applied, Corpus, Forensic and Computational Linguistics, Discourse
Analysis, Field Research, Testing and Evaluation, Interactive Learning, Problem-based Learning, Thinking and Communication,
Speech-language Pathology, Translation and Interpretation, Gender Issues and Professional Communication.
