Welcome to the website of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics!
This faculty was initially set up in 1972 as a language centre responsible for conducting language courses relevant to the
needs of the other institutions of the university. In 1995, it was established as a faculty. Currently, there are 130 academic
staff members catering to a student population of more than 1200. The undergraduate programme leads to bachelor’s degrees
in 9 areas of specialisation. A PhD programme and three Masters programmes are run at the postgraduate level. In 2005, the
faculty was identified as the country’s specialist in the field of languages and linguistics.
Research activities at the faculty encompass a
range of linguistic sub-disciplines. Projects on indigenous languages in Malaysia, corpora of written and spoken English, discourse analysis and various other areas are on-going. Conferences
and seminars on language and linguistics are conducted at the faculty regularly. Our staff members are frequently invited
to be paper presenters at international conferences and consultants for both public and private organisations.
The faculty encourages students and staff from
overseas to participate in their programmes. Currently, the faculty has lecturers from countries such as Spain, Italy, Japan, Korea and students from the Middle East, China and Indonesia. We often receive visitors from
overseas who want to learn more about what we do here, and we look towards more collaboration with academics from other institutions.
I am excited for the faculty as we venture into
new territories and look forward to further intellectual growth and development in our quest to reach greater heights.
