The birth of the Civil Engineering Department in 1956 at the University of Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur
marks the beginning of tertiary enginering education in Malaysia. Expansion of the faculty quickly ensued with the establishment
of the Mechanical Engineering Department soon after(1956) and followed by Electrical Engineering Department in 1959. The Chemical
Engineering Department established in 1975 completes the traditional departments within the Faculty. New frontiers into engineering
education emerged with the setting up of the Department of Engineering Design and Manufacture in 1996 to be followed by the
creation of Department of Biomedical Engineering in 1997.
Faculty of Engineering is the oldest ones among to the others in University of Malaya. This ultimate faculty was started officially
in 1956 by offering the Civil Engineering course only. And then, they have started to offer more traditional engineering courses
such as Mechanical Engineering (1958), Electrical Engineering (1959) and followed by Chemical Engineering (1975). All the
programmes are conducted according to "System Penggal" with 4 year minimum of studies.
