Department of General Dental Pratice and Oral & Maxillofacial Imaging
The General Dental Practice Unit was approved by the Ministry of Education on 28th
Mac 1994 when the Bachelor of Dental Surgery four-year curriculum was extended to a five-year period. The structure of teaching
general dental practice included tutorials, seminars, clinical sessions and visits to the private practice in the fifth year
of undergraduate study. The component of oral diagnosis which as undertaken by this unit and was conducted in the third, fourth
and fifth year.
The subject of oral and maxillofacial imaging was taught from the year 1999
by the Oral Radiology Division. Students are taught the subjects on radiation physics in the 2nd year, techniques
of taking radiographs in the 3rd year and the interpretation of radiographs in the fourth year. In the initial
period the subject was examined as a part of the General Dental Practice paper.However,
in 2001 the Oral Radiology examination was combined with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery paper for purposes of examining
the fourth year students.
On 24th October 2001, the Curriculum Committee of the faculty proposed
that the General Dental Practice Unit and the Oral Radiology Division to be amalgamated as one department. This proposal was
received favorably and the proposal paper was submitted to the Ministry of Higher Education. Subsequently the approval to
establish the new Department of General Dental Practice and Oral & Maxillofacial Imaging was granted on 28th
July 2004.The new department was entrusted to improve the administration, academic
endeavors and also the research contributions in areas of general dental practice, oral diagnosis and oral & maxillofacial
imaging.In the near future there will be efforts to develop postgraduate courses
in these specialties too.
