The Department of Children’s Dentistry and Orthodontics
is a combined academic department encompassing the disciplines of Children’s (Paediatric) Dentistry as well as Orthodontics.
It is responsible for the conduct of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in both specialties. Currently the Department
has 9 academic staff and 10 supporting staff.
In
the 5-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme, teaching in both Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry begins in Year
3 through to Year 5.
Postgraduate
programmes in Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry started with the year 2000 intakes. Both the Master in Orthodontics and
Master in Clinical Dentistry (Child Dental Health) are 4-year programmes; for the latter candidates undergo the first three
years at the Faculty and spend their final year with appointed consultants at approved centres under the Oral Health Division,
Ministry of Health Malaysia.
The Paediatric
Dentistry and Orthodontic clinics provide specialist treatment by the lecturers. Cases seen in these clinics include those
referred from other clinics in the Faculty, University of Malaya Medical Centre and other government or private clinics. Department organizes and
provides continuing dental care (in the Faculty) to children from three primary schools in Petaling Jaya.

Department's Mission
To nurture excellence in the training of dental students and facilitate their learning in dentistry for children and
basic orthodontics that will enable them to achieve competencies expected of dental graduates, in both disciplines by:
i.Providing undergraduates with the facilities, academic environment and
appropriate teaching-learning methods to acquire basic competencies in Children dentistry and Orthodontics.
ii.Promoting SDL so as to include life-long learning
iii.Promoting innovations in the teaching-learning programmes, thereby assisting
Faculty in becoming a centre of excellence in dental education.
