The UM Symphony Orchestra
began as a symphonic band in 1998, the brainchild of
the then Vice-Chancellor
Dato’ Dr. Abdullah Sanusi
Ahmad (later Tan Sri). The
strength of the band in terms of membership and
capabilities improved with
the return of Dr Mohd
Nasir Hashim from his study
leave in 2001.
On 26 March 2003, the UM Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) was launched by His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Shah, the Chancellor of
the University. This was made possible with the introduction of an elective course in Music whereby
students from various faculties and disciplines could register for the course and perform in the Orchestra.
Since its launch the UMSO has performed 6 concerts on campus. They are:
The Official Launch of the UM Symphony Orchestra (March 26, 2003)
