Officer in charge :Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Nasir Hashim

The UM Symphony Orchestra began as a symphonic band in 1998, the brainchild of the then Vice-Chancellor Dato’ Dr. Abdullah Sanusi Ahmad (later Tan Sri). The strength of the band  in  terms of membership and capabilities improved with the return of Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim from his study leave in 2001.

On 26 March 2003, the UM Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) was launched by His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Shah, the Chancellor of the University. This was made possible with the introduction of an elective course in Music whereby students from various faculties and disciplines could register for the course and perform in the Orchestra.

Since its launch the UMSO has performed 6 concerts on campus. They are:

  • The Official Launch of the UM Symphony Orchestra (March 26, 2003)
  • Piano Entree (January 14, 2004)
  • East-West in Harmony, with the St Catharine’s Consort,     University of Cambridge, UK (September 15, 2004)
  • UMSO in Concert For The Children of Tsunami (January 26, 2005)
  • An Evening of Poetry and Music (September 10, 2005)
  • Classical Tones & Modern Touch (Disember 10, 2005)
  • Celebrating Love & Live (June 1, 2007)

Apart from on-campus concerts, UMSO and its ensemble were also invited to perform by various agencies.

Thus far, the UMSO has accompanied Ning Baizura, Kopratasa, Zubir Ali, Sham Visa, Zainal Abidin, Siti Sara, Zamani, Akma AF4 and Man Kidal.
