About

OVERVIEW

The Cultural Centre was established in 1974 to provide and manage cultural based co-curriculum activies for students and staff. Eventually it became the meeting place of professionals, artistes, traditional masters, art critics and of course, the students.

The centre promotes traditional Malaysian culture and at the same time  supportes contemporary performances. It has organized regular theatre, music and dance performances on and off campus. The centre also held visual arts exhibitions and seminars on arts and culture. Tours and participations in international cultural festivals are regularly organized. For the last three decades, Universiti Malaya’s  cultural troupes have toured many countries in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, East and Southeast Asia.

In 1997 the Cultural Centre was upgraded to a full fledged academic centre while retaining its role as cultural events manager: managing and co-ordinating cultural events for the University.  Since then the centre offers degree programmes in Performing Arts to educate, train and nurture future performers, managers, technologists and scholars in the fields of music, drama and dance.

In 2001, post-graduate programmes started for candidates to pursue master and doctoral degrees in various aspects of performing and visual arts. Currently the programmes offered are:

Undergraduate Programs

1)      Bachelor of Performing Arts (Music)

2)      Bachelor of Performing Arts (Drama)

3)      Bachelor of Performing Arts (Dance)

Post Graduate Programs

1)      Master of Art (Performing Arts)

2)      Master of Art (Visual Art)

3)      Doctor of Philosophy

The Centre is headed by the Director assisted by two Deputy Directors (for academic matters and research) and the Chief Cultural Officer (for cultural event management and services). The individual major programs of dance, drama and music are headed by a Co-ordinator each.
